This is the first of two 2019 Nicholson Lectures offered at Atlantic School of Theology.

Dr. Brandes has been teaching at the University of King's College, Halifax, for the past 15 years. He is also Director of the Contemporary Studies Program. Most of his writings and courses taught are concerned with the contemporary German and/ or Jewish thinkers: Arendt, Heidegger, Rosenzweig, Benjamin and Scholem. He is currently at work on a manuscript on the theoretical proximity and distance of Hannah Arendt and Walter Benjamin.
